Welcome, Nygina. It’s a pleasure to have you with us today. Your career spans various significant roles across both the public and private sectors. Could you share with us what drives your passion for legal practice and corporate governance?
Thank you for having me. My passion for legal practice and corporate governance stems from a deep-seated belief in the power of law and strategic governance to not only guide businesses toward success but also to ensure they operate ethically and contribute positively to society. The dynamic nature of law, especially in the context of technology and finance, presents endless opportunities for innovation and problem-solving. This is what excites me and keeps me motivated.
Could you share how your educational background at Harvard has shaped your approach in your diverse roles?
My time at Harvard was pivotal. Harvard Law School taught me the rigor of legal analysis and the importance of precision, while Harvard Business School emphasized the strategic aspect of management. This dual perspective has been crucial in my roles that blend legal and strategic business decisions. It’s truly enabled me to navigate complex issues effectively and drive innovation within the organizations I’ve served.
You’ve had a remarkable journey, from your tenure as a Partner at FisherBroyles, LLP to a Regulator of diverse industries including Defense and Aerospace, Transportation, Banking, PE, VC, among others, to your involvement with the ABA Section of Business Law. How do you approach leading teams in such diverse environments?
Leading teams in diverse environments requires adaptability, clear communication, and a commitment to understanding the unique strengths of each team member. I prioritize creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. It’s also crucial to align the team around a shared vision and goals, ensuring we’re all moving in the same direction and leveraging our diverse perspectives to innovate and solve problems effectively.
The integration of AI in corporate governance is a trend you find particularly exciting. Can you elaborate on how you see AI transforming corporate governance and legal practices?
AI has the potential to revolutionize corporate governance and legal practices by enhancing decision-making processes, risk assessments, and compliance monitoring. For instance, AI can analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns and predict potential legal and governance risks before they become issues. This proactive approach allows for more informed decision-making and can significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of governance practices. Also, AI can automate routine compliance checks, freeing up legal professionals to focus on more strategic tasks.
Resilience and adaptability are qualities you value highly. Can you share an instance where these qualities helped you navigate a particularly challenging situation in your career?
One challenging situation that comes to mind was during the early days of the pandemic when I was Director of Strategic Initiatives at the U.S. Department of Education. We had to quickly adapt our strategies to manage the impact on loan borrowers in the $1.5 trillion dollar portfolio and ensure continuity of learning. This required resilience, as the situation was evolving rapidly, and adaptability, as we had to pivot our approaches frequently based on new information. My ability to stay focused, think creatively, and lead my team through uncertainty was crucial in developing effective responses to the challenges we faced.
Looking toward the future, what advice would you give to young professionals aspiring to make a mark in the fields of legal practice and corporate governance?
My advice to young professionals is to embrace continuous learning and stay curious. The fields of legal practice and corporate governance are constantly evolving, and staying informed about the latest trends, technologies, and regulatory changes is key to success. Additionally, build a diverse professional network. The insights and opportunities that come from a broad network are invaluable. Finally, don’t be afraid to take calculated risks and step out of your comfort zone. It’s often in those moments that you’ll find the greatest opportunities for growth and innovation.
